Getting inspiration on Medium

I plan to participate in NaNoWriMo this year for the first time. I planned so a few times a long time ago and forgot about it for some years. This year I was pretty determined to really make it and finish it! I started thinking about stories and plots. I even layed out some details for one idea I had in mind. At some point I realized, that this wasn’t for me… Since then I was stuck. I had no idea what I should write about, what my story would be! NaNoWriMo starts this Sunday! I hoped to have some other ideas by now which I could start planning before completely diving in next month! But I had nothing…

I browsed through lots of fiction and short stories on Medium today. This is an incredible source of inspiration when you are stuck finding a topic for a story! I read some really nice stuff and pulled out some ideas for my novel. I took some notes and instead of having nothing to write about, I have a list of things I can work with and try to plot out some cornerstones and see what works for me and what doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t copy anything of course! But reading more fiction always gets the motor running and ideas start to pop up in my head. Short stories help a lot! You don’t need to read a whole book… you just browse around, read a story here and there and you immediately feel ideas forming in the back of your brain!

So… if you plan to also take part in NaNoWriMo this year and are stuck without a story and start to panic like I did… take some time, search for Short Stories and Fiction around here on Medium and dig out some ideas for your novel!

This is a cross-post from my Medium Profile where I publish some things to experiment with. All content I publish there, can also be found here.
